2025 Global Box Office: ‘Ne Zha 2,’ ‘Zootopia 2’ and ‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’ Are the Year’s Biggest Animated Features

As the final day of the year comes to a close, we now have the estimated total box office numbers for the U.S. and the world. Not surprisingly, Ne Zha 2, Zootopia 2 and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle emerged as the top three animated movies of the year worldwide, while Statewide, the top three animation spots belonged to Zootopia 2, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Mufasa: The Lion King. Of course, the overall U.S. top ten chart is also dominated by titles such as A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, Superman, Jurassic World: Rebirth, Wicked: For Good, Sinners, The Fantastic Four, How to Train Your Dragon and Avatar: Fire & Ash — all of which rely heavily on CG animation and vfx magic to tell their stories.

In addition to Disney, which has four of the big animated titles of the year (Zootopia 2, Mufasa: The Liong King, Elio and Moana 2, DreamWorks also had a good year with its two powerhouse features Dog Man ($97.9 million) and The Bad Guys 2 ($82.6 million) landing at the No. 4 and 5 spots on the U.S. chart, while Utah-based independent Angel (formerly known as Angel Studios), which specializes in crowdfunded and faith-based titles, made  impressive showings by releasing two Biblical animated tales The King of Kings (at no. 7)  with $60.7 million and the Christmas hit David at no. 9 with $52.4 million. Paramount’s underwater hero SpongeBob’s new movie managed to make a good splash with $38 million since its Dec.18 release. It’s also interesting to note that while Ne Zha 2 became the world’s biggest animated movie of 2025, it only managed to score $23.2 million at the U.S. box office, landing at the No. 12 of the animated chart (below Smurfs at No. 11) and the No. 70 in the overall box office of the year (live-action and animated).

In related box office news, Zootopia 2 has become Disney’s highest-grossing movie of all time with $1.46 billion at the global box office. The film hit the $1 billion threshold after only 17 days of release, and it became the fastest PG-rated movie in history to reach this milestone. The record previously belonged to Frozen 2, which made $1.45 billion in 2019. The movie has made over $333 million in the U.S. and $1.13 billion in other territories. Only two other movies have passed the billion mark in 2025: Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, ($1.03 billion); and China’s Ne Zha 2, which made over $2.2 billion globally.

Disney’s Zootopia 2 is the No. 1 animated movie of the year, and Disney’s biggest animated movie of all time (surpassing “Frozen II”).
