The other foreign-language films in contention for the award are the German thriller The Baader Meinhof Complex by director Uli Edel, the Italian mafia drama Gomorrah from Matteo Garrone, and the French family drama I’ve Loved You So Long by Philippe Claudel.
For the second year running, the Film Not in the English Language Chapter has announced its nominees ahead of those in other categories. This early announcement of nominations allows members a longer period to view the five foreign-language films. Chapter voting for this award was introduced for last year’s kudo fest. A chapter is comprised of Academy voting members with expertise in a specific area of the film industry.
The rest of the BAFTA nominations for films released in 2008 will be announced on Jan. 15. The awards ceremony will then be held on Feb. 8 at London’s Royal Opera House.
