It’s a sign of the times when Hollywood special effects master Stan Winston, known for his animatronics work on such film franchises as Jurassic Park, The Terminator, Alien and Predator, jumps on the CG bandwagon. According to Variety, the four-time Oscar-winning creature crafter is launching a computer animation division dubbed SW Digtial.
For years Winston’s lifelike, robotic creations have been employed alongside computer effects to bring rampaging dinosaurs, extra terrestrials, killer apes and evil cyborgs to life. However, the digital realm isn’t unfamiliar territory for the co-founder of computer effects house Digital Domain.
SW Digital will reportedly lend its services to productions with small to medium sized budgets at first. The division will also serve Winston’s own production banner, under which he co-produced the slasher flick Wrong Turn and the monster movie remake series Creature Features for HBO and Cinemax.
The move doesn’t mean that Winston is done with rubber, slime and servo motors. The CG services will be offered in addition to the monster maestro’s regular menu.
