Nickelodeon’s animated phenomenon Avatar: The Last Airbender will conclude its Book Three with a two-hour television movie scheduled to air on Saturday, July 19 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) Titled Sozin’s Comet, the special presentation has Aang learning that he must confront his mortal enemy, the Firelord, earlier than planned. As the comet nears, he prepares mentally and physically for the attack, but only time will tell if he has the heart to take the Firelord’s life. The movie will round out a week of ten new episodes kicking off on Monday, July 14 at 8 p.m. with “Western Air Temple.” The first new installment picks up after Aang and the gang flee from the failed invasion of the Fire Nation. Reeling from defeat and having left so many behind, the group hides in the Western Air Temple to devise a new plan. They are displeased to find someone unexpected when they arrive, even though they are in need of assistance.
“Since its premiere, Avatar‘s captivating storylines and compelling characters have kept fans on the edge of their seats,” comments Brown Johnson, president of animation for Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. “The remainder of Book Three is full of surprises and plot twists, and we’re excited to be bringing fans the event they’ve been waiting for–the final face-off between Aang and the Firelord.”
Created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar premiered in February of 2005 and has been one of the top five animated series on all television among boys 9-14. The hit toon has even inspired the live-action feature film titled M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, which Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies will launch in theaters in July of 2010. DiMartino and Konietzko serve as executive producers on the pic.
