DIC Ent. has been appointed exclusive worldwide licensing agent for the perennial girl’s property Eloise and all the Eloise rights controlled by brand management company HandMade. DIC will develop a comprehensive licensing and merchandising program for the book, animation, film and toy franchise, which joins a catalog of brands including Strawberry Shortcake, Madeline and Mommy & Me.
Starting in spring of 2008, DIC plans to market Eloise across key categories excluding entertainment but including toys, books, apparel and accessories. The consumer products program will coincide with the 2008 release of the live-action feature film Eloise in Paris. A Broadway show based on the property is also in development.
Eloise is a six year-old girl who lives in the “room on the tippy-top floor” of the Plaza Hotel in New York with her Nanny, her pug dog Weenie and her turtle Skipperdee. The property was introduced in the 1950s in a series of children’s books written by Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight. Simon & Schuster began publishing new books in the classic style in 2005 and will have 11 titles in the series by year’s end.
HandMade Films and Starz Ent.’s Film Roman teamed to produced a 13-episode animated Eloise television series for that premiered in 2006 on Starz Kids and the Family Channel in the U.S. Previously, in 2003, HandMade produced two Emmy Award-winning Eloise television movies, Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, which starred Julie Andrews and aired on ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney. Buena Vista Home Entertainment subsequently released the two titles on DVD, which to date have sold more than a million units in the U.S.
