The latest edition of the WB Reel News Podcast focuses on animation as it highlights the recent Warner Home Video releases Justice League: The New Frontier and Appleseed Ex Machina. The free iTunes offering includes clips from both films, plus snippets of producer Bruce Timm discussing the making of New Frontier.
Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Darwyn Cooke, Justice League: The New Frontier tells the epic tale of the founding of the Justice League. DC Comics legends Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and The Flash band together to form the legendary league of caped crusaders and combat a monster that threatens to wipe humanity from the face of the Earth. In the podcast, Timm discusses painful decisions that had to be made in condensing the story for the screen, including cutting the comic’s opening scene involving the Losers on Dinosaur Island. The film was released on DVD in late February.
Based on the manga by Shirow Masamune, the latest feature-length chapter in the Appleseed animated franchise finds ESWAT officers Deunan, Briareos and Tereus charged with preserving the peace of the city-state of Olympus as the hi-tech sanctuary comes under attack by cyborg terrorists, deadly nanotech zealots and rioting citizens. Directed by Shinji Aramaki, who helmed the first two installments, the movie was released last week as a two-disc collectors edition.
