A unique joint venture between a public library and a film festival is helping bring animation further into the digital age. The International Festival for Animated Film Stuttgart, the MFG Filmförderung Baden Württemberg and the public library of Stuttgart have launched an online animation library, where the renowned festival’s line-up will be permanently accessible via computer from the library. The aim is to create a first-class online resource for animated film that can be used as a film archive as well as a sales platform for professionals.
More than 10,000 archived films will be gradually digitized and added to the collection. The ITFS will also use the technology—Reelport’s white label solution PicturePipe—to present each year’s submissions to an audience of professionals who will be given access to a modified section used as an online marketplace as of May 2012. The platform’s entry form will also allow filmmakers to submit their films online.
PicturePipe, the highly customizable technology behind the Online Animation Library, is provided by German software company Reelport GmbH, which specializes in the flawless and highly secured online play-out of video files within a variety of web solutions. Together with the Medienfestival GmbH (organizer of ITFS), Reelport has also created the front end, design and database for the OAL and developed the online entry form.
