As director Stephen Sommers CG-laden, live-action horror/adventure extravaganza, Van Helsing, gets set to take a bite out of the box office this weekend, Universal has released information on the under-promoted animated prequel. Van Helsing: The London Assignment, starring Hugh Jackman as the voice of the title hero, arrives at home video retailers on Tuesday, May 11.
Exec produced by Sommers and Van Helsing producer Bob Ducsay, The London Assignment has Bram Stokers mysterious monster-hunter sent to London by the Knights of the Holy Order to capture a demonic creature that has been murdering young women in the dark of night. Van Helsing works to unravel the mystery of the sinister being known as Mr. Hyde (voiced by Robbie Coltrane from the Harry Potter movies). The pursuit rages through 19th century London, hitting to such landmarks as the citys newly built underground railway system, an under-construction Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace.
Priced at $14.98, the DVD includes a look at the process of moving from storyboards to animatics to animation, as well as "Behind-the-Screams" peeks at the making of the live-action feature and the Vivendi Universal video game. Read all about the game in the May issue of Animation Magazine. Also look for our June cover story on Van Helsing and watch this site for more information on Van Helsing: The London Assignment.
