Miyazaki Classics, Family Guy Hit DVD

Two animated masterpieces from famed Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki are joined on video shelves today by a box set containing two seasons of a cult hit TV show. The Family Guy Volume 1 DVD collection debuts alongside the acclaimed Kiki’s Delivery Service and Best Animated Feature Oscar winner Spirited Away.

The four-disc Family Guy collection contains all 28 episodes from the first and second seasons (1999-2000) of the FOX series. The show chronicles the comic exploits of the loveably dysfunctional Griffin family. The title character, Peter Griffin, is a big, boisterous oaf who lives in Quahog, Rhode Island with wife Lois and their three children Chris, Meg and Stewie – a brilliant, sadistic baby bent on destroying the world. Rounding out the cast of characters is Brian, the smooth-talking, cigarette-smoking family dog.

Bonus features include commentary by exec. producer/creator Seth MacFarlane and other cast and crew on eight episodes. The Fox Home video release lists at $49.98. Be sure and enter our Family Guy contest and win your free copy!

If you missed Miyazaki’s Spirited Away at your local art house, you can take home the two-disc DVD. Included are the original Japanese-language track, a introduction by John Lasseter (producer of the English-language version), a featurette on the voice talent, a making-of featurette, The Art of Spirited Away, original Japanese trailers and select storyboard to scene comparison. Other features include both Spanish- and French-language tracks and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound.

Miyazaki’s 1989 feature Kiki’s Delivery Service is now available for the first time on DVD. The coming-of-age tale of a spunky 13-year-old witch who, along with her talking cat, uses her flying broom to make deliveries for the local bakery. The English-language voice cast includes Spider-Man‘s Kirsten Dunst, late comedian Phil Hartman, stage and screen great Debbie Reynolds and actress/comedian Janeane Garofalo.
