‘Guardians’ Rise Above ‘Pi’ on Home Ent. Charts

DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians may have only been the studio’s 18th-highest grossing film at the box office when it hit theaters last year, but it’s definitely getting a second wind in the home entertainment sphere.

HV sales charts (to March 17) reveal that Guardians releases—distributed by Paramount Home—came in first ahead of 20th Century Fox’s much-lauded vfx showpiece Life of Pi in both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert (overall disc sales) and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray charts. Pi took the number two slot in both rankings.

The Nielsen data shows Pi sold 69.2 percent as many discs as Guardians. The Hollywood Reporter points out that the DWA fantasy also earned a number two debut on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, behind MGM’s Bond blockbuster Skyfall.

Disney’s Oscar-nominated CG effort Wreck-It Ralph was bumped from the number one slot to number three following its gangbusters disc launch the week before. Ralph placed third in the rentals chart for the second week in a row.
