Navarre Corp.’s FUNimation Ent. will release the Dragon Ball Z movies Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan and Broly: Second Coming as its first high-definition home entertainment product on Blu-ray disc. Two of the best-selling DBZ features of all time, the pics have been remastered in high-definition, digitally restored and enhanced with an all-new 5.1 surround sound mix for the release.
After seeing demos of each next generation platform, it was clear that the Blu-ray platform was ideal for FUNimation,” notes Ward Thomas, senior VP of sales and operations for FUNimation Ent. “The capabilities of the Blu-ray technology allows our fans to enjoy their favorite FUNimation titles like never before.”
Dragon Ball Z Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan and Broly: Second Coming are slated to hit shelves on Nov. 13. The video has been transferred directly from the original 35mm Japanese film and all of the special features on the disc are in full 1920 x 1080p HD. Included is a featurette about the restoration, re-mastering and high-definition processes titled Dragon Ball Z: A New Look.
FUNimation will start rolling out high-definition versions of some of its most popular catalog titles in the U.S. following this initial release. Further details, including street dates and pricing, will be released at a later date.
A double-layer Blu-ray Disc will hold up to 50GB of data, compared to the 10GB capacity of a standard-definition DVD. This extra storage capacity makes the Blu-ray Disc well suited for high-definition feature films with additional bonus and interactive material. The next-generation format is also supported by many of the world’s leading consumer electronics, personal computer and gaming companies.
