Fresh off his Oscar-winning turn as an infamous Ugandan dictator, Forest Whitaker is bringing DEWmocracy to the online gaming world. Daily Variety reports that the actor has teamed with Pepsi-Cola North America to produce the fantasy game that allows users to come up with a new flavor of Mountain Dew for 2008. Whitaker was instrumental in creating the virtual world and characters, as well as mini-games to challenge visitors while they’re not experimenting with colors, flavors and label graphics.
DEWmocracy was developed by Matti Leshem’s Protagonist, a firm that creates entertainment concepts for Pepsi brands, in association with website creator WhitmanHart Interactive. Whitaker was initially brought in to lend a voice to one of the characters after Leshem saw him in The Last King of Scotland, but he opted to get more involved once he saw the creative potential of the project. Also known for directing such films as Hope Floats and Waiting to Exhale, Whitaker was enlisted to helm a vfx-infused, live-action short film that gets players started on their quest to create the ‘elixir of freedom.’
Written by by Tony Bui and featuring game designs by Syd Dutton of Illusion Arts, DEWmocracy is now online at www.dewmocracy.com. Users will be able to vote on three new Mountain Dew flavors in February, and the winning concoction will be made available to the public in July.
