Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) announced today a new 40GB internal hard disk drive for PlayStation 2, which will come pre-installed with the popular online title Final Fantasy XI.
Among other things, the Hard Disc Drive offers gamers the ability to download online game content such as new tracks, stadiums and characters. Andrew House, exec VP of Sony Computer Entertainment America, comments, “With 2.6 million network-ready PlayStation 2 consoles in more than 25 million homes throughout North America, the internal Hard Disk Drive paves the way for delivering countless forms of digital entertainment to this massive audience.”
Developed by Square Enix and published by SCEA, Final Fantasy XI allows cross-platform, cross-continent gameplay between a PlayStation 2 and a PC. The massively multiplayer online role-playing game brings the Final Fantasy world to a persistent environment that continues to evolve. Various communication tools have been incorporated to assist in interaction between players.
The Hard Disk Drive slides into the PlayStation 2 expansion bay and attaches to the Network Adaptor (Ethernet/modem) for both broadband or dial-up networks. It is available immediately for the suggested retail price of $99.
