Its looking like another winning season for Electronic Arts and its Madden NFL series. The game publisher announced that internal data indicates that Madden NFL 2005 sold more than 1.35 million copies within the first week, making it the biggest launch of a Madden title in the franchise’s 15-year history.
A month before the release of the latest Madden installment, EA shipped NCAA Football 2005, which became the top selling video game for PlayStation 2 in July. With double digit sell-through percentage increases this year, both Madden NFL 2005 and NCAA Football 2005 are tracking ahead of last year, when independent data showed they were the No. 1- and No. 2-selling football titles for the year.
In addition to the phenomenal retail sales, the two pigskin titles are driving gamers to online arenas. EA says that within a month of NCAA Football 2005 shipping to retail and just days after the release of Madden NFL 2005, more than 315,000 new online user accounts have been created for PlayStation 2 and Xbox Live.
EA plans to keep its lucrative sports line in the winners bracket with the upcoming releases NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2005, NBA LIVE 2005, NHL 2005, FIFA Soccer 2005 and March Madness 2005.
