Hasbro Inc. has entered into an agreement with producers Tom DeSanto (X-Men, X2: X-Men United) and Don Murphy (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) to turn the toy company’s enormously popular Transformers brand into a live-action feature that will doubtlessly rely heavily on CG effects.
“Like X-Men, Transformers offers an amazing mythology with all the elements to create a successful ongoing franchise iconic characters, global themes and a world that has never been seen before on screen,” says DeSanto.
Introduced in the U.S. toy market in 1984, Transformers soon got their own hit animated TV series. The latest incarnation, Transformers Armada, airs on Cartoon Network seven times a week and draws more than 12 million viewers. The show also airs in Europe and Australia.
The toys are still one of the most popular brands among boys with sales seeing a 64% spike in the past year. Transformers Armada comic books, published by Dreamwave, are also highly successful around the world. New Transformers television programming and comic books are set to launch in 2004.
