Stars Tapped for Monsters vs. Aliens

The stars are aligning for Monsters vs. Aliens, the upcoming DreamWorks Animation feature slated for released by Paramount Pictures on March 27, 2009. A reinvention of ’50s era monster movies, the pic will be the toon studio’s first film produced in ‘Ultimate 3-D,’ the studio’s proprietary production process of creating animated films in stereoscopic 3-D from start to finish in 3-D, a trend that will continue with future projects.

Signed to the voice cast are Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) as Susan ‘Ginormica’ Murphy; Golden Globe winner Hugh Laurie (House) as Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.; Will Arnett (Semi-Pro) as The Missing Link; Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) as B.O.B.; Rainn Wilson (The Office) as Gallaxhar; Emmy winner Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report) as The President of the United States; Golden Globe winner Kiefer Sutherland (24) as General W.R. Monger; and Paul Rudd (Knocked Up) as Susan’s boyfriend, Derek.

DreamWorks Animation has also released some new plot details. The fun begins when California girl Susan Murphy is hit by a meteor full of outer space gunk and grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall. Labeled a monster and given the moniker Ginormica, she is captured by the military and held in a secret government compound where the military has been quietly rounding up other monsters over the years. This ragtag group consists of the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.; a macho half-ape, half-fish known as The Missing Link; the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B.; and a 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement time is cut short when mysterious aliens land on Earth and the monsters are called into action to save the world from imminent destruction.

The flick is being directed by Rob Letterman (Shark Tale) and Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2), produced by Lisa Stewart (I Think I Love My Wife) and co-produced by Jill Hopper and Latifa Ouaou. Up next for DreamWorks Animation in Kung Fu Panda, which hits theaters on June 6.
