‘Sing 2’ Serenades Audiences as Top-Grossing Toon of the Pandemic

Illumination has scored another franchise box-office hit in spite of Omicron spikes, as Sing 2 continues to lure family audiences to the cinema with its siren song.

Having just made its PVOD debut on Friday, the music-filled sequel took in another $11.95 million for Universal Pictures this weekend, hitting $109 million in its third week to become the highest-grossing domestic animation release since pandemic shutdowns ramped up in March 2020. The pic’s worldwide total is $190.8M.

The film screened in 3,713 theaters nationwide (down 179) and saw a week-on-week ticket sales drop of -41%. Sing 2 came in at No. 2 overall this weekend, behind Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, still swinging in its fourth week with a three-day take of $33M ($668.7M cume). Sci-fi VFX showpiece Matrix Resurrections (Warner Bros.) came in at No. 6 in its third week with $1.86M, reaching a $34.3M total, while Ghostbusters: Afterlife is still hanging in the top 10 after eight weeks, at No. 8 ($1.14M/$125M cume).

Sing 2 has pulled ahead of 2021’s late-arriving highest grossing animated release Encanto in the domestic race. The Disney musical fantasy has earned $92.4M domestic with a worldwide total of $215.5M.
