First Scooby-Doo, then Garfield and now the "stupendous" pig. Daily Variety reports that Paramount Pictures will give loveable Wilbur a CG makeover for an upcoming live-action/animated remake of the classic E.B. White childrens book, Charlottes Web. Director Gary Winick (13 Going on 30) has been signed to take the helm for producer Jordan Kerner.
In the timeless tale, a kind and wise spider named Charlotte saves Wilbur from slaughter and makes him famous by weaving webs with messages in them. The story was first animated for the big screen in 1973 by Hanna-Barbera Prods and Sagittarius Prods. The feature, distributed by Paramount, remains a family favorite.
Winick will direct from a script by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich, In Her Shoes), with revisions by Karey Kirkpatrick (The Rescuers Down Under, James and the Giant Peach, Chicken Run). Sagittarius Prods. owner Edgar Bronfman, who co-produced the original animated film, will serve as exec. producer. Overseeing development is Paul Neesan, production head at Kerner Ent. Production president Karen Rosenfelt will supervise for Paramount.
