Sony Pictures Animation has tapped Open Season director Jill Culton to take over helming duties on Hotel Transylvania, according to the The Hollywood Reporter. Currently in development, the CG-animated feature is being written by brothers Kevin and Daniel Hageman. Culton replaces the team of Open Season co-director Anthony Stacchi and head of story David Feiss, who were previously attached to man the desk at the peculiar, eastern European inn where the guest registry includes some real blood suckers.
Playing on the Romeo and Juliet theme, Hotel Transylvania centers on the star-crossed romance between Simon Van Helsing of the famous line of monster hunters and Dracula’s daughter. They’re forbidden love causes a lot of problems, but may be the one thing that can end the centuries-old conflict between monsters and humans.
Also reteaming from the Open Season crew are producer Michelle Murdocca and co-producer Amy Jupiter. Sony Animation has been developing the project for some time, and seems to be making some headway at last. The pic was originally slated to follow Surf’s Up in the production pipeline but has dropped back behind a toon adaptation of Judi and Ron Barrett’s kids’ book, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. The studio is surely energized by its recent Oscar nomination for the penguin surfing movie Surf’s Up.
