China Braces for Storm Rider

Storm Rider: Clash of Evils, an animated feature based on the bestselling Chinese comic book series Fung Wan, is slated open theatrically in China next month. According to Daily Variety, the $10 million toon from Shanghai Media Group and Shenzhen-based Puzzle Animation has been five years in the making and will debut in 200 theaters on July 19.

The Fung Wan comics, created by Ma Rongchen, are set in China during the Ming Dynasty and revolve around two martial arts practitioners, Nip Fung (nicknamed Wind) and Bou Keng Wan (nicknamed Cloud), as they practice their fighting art and strive to become legendary figures. The series has reportedly sold more than 100 million copies throughout Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.

The property was first adapted for the screen in 1998 with a live-action flick titled The Storm Riders. A sequel, The Storm Warriors, is now in production with the Pang Bros. directing. There have also been two Taiwanese TV series based on the illustrated tales. Shanghai Media and Puzzle Animation are in negotiations with distributors for the animated feature.
