Avatar did it again.
The new holder of the all-time world record for box office earnings took the domestic weekend prize for the seventh weekend in a row, taking in an estimated $30 million.
That takes puts the film within easy striking distance of the only record still belonging to Titanic: the No. 1 spot on the all-time domestic box office. And Titanic‘s mark of $600 million will easily fall with Avatar poised to leap past it with a current tally of $594 million.
Disney’s The Princess and the Frog crossed the $100 million mark, taking in $757,000 over the weekend to surpass that mark in its 10th weekend of overall release and eighth of wide release.
Newcomers Edge of Darkness and When in Rome did decent business, with the Mel Gibson thriller opening with $17 million and the Kristen Bell romantic comedy earning about $12 million.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel came in ninth place, with a $4 million weekend that pushed its domestic take to a strong $209 million total.
