Nigeria’s largest association of comic-book publishers and animation studios, Creative Industry Conventions Africa, has teamed up with US firm BIAYA Consulting to present the first UNICON comics, animation, VFX and games convention. The inaugural event will take place at Landmark Center in Lagos on November 17.
UNICON will spotlight the Nigerian creative industry and demonstrate the power, reach and profitability of African. The combined industry showcase and summit will engage international and local players in the opportunities of the regional industry, as well as highlight the talent and ingenuity of local creators.
The day’s program will include gaming competitions and exhibitions, screenings, panels, and informative conversations with industry pros on topics such as capacity building, project financing, distribution and more.
“UNICON came to life due to the need to promote and establish this industry, the creative industry, whereby it can establish a whole new income generating sector for this part of the world. We focus so much on oil and other resources, but we haven’t really focused on creativity,” said CICA President Peter Daniel. “I believe that if you
want to change society, you need to change the narrative, let the kids know, let the future know, that they are powerful and that they can do anything. Everyone knows America is great, because they have sold the story. We need to do the same.”
The global VFX & Games Market was valued at US $254 Billion in 2017, and digital distribution comic-book sales has grown by 20% year over year since 2012. The global opportunities for comic books, especially in this new age of TV, film, and animation adaptations and digital distribution, means that the real potential of the creative industry is in the multiple streams of income that can emerge from a single written story, or comic book.
“There is an opportunity to make this an investment opportunity, a career, something you can actually live off of. This is for the future,” said Ibrahim Ganiyu, VP of CICA.
