Cartoon Movie closed out its record-breaking 12th edition March 5 in Lyon, France, reflecting the steady growth of interest in both animation and stereoscopic 3-D in Europe.
More than 630 participants ‘ an increase of 5 percent from last year ‘ attended the event, with the number of distributors rising from 70 to 90, a 30 percent increase. The show previewed 51 films with a total budget of 300 million euros.
Stereoscopic 3-D also showed extensive growth, with 25 percent of projects presented at Cartoon Movie having been developed or conceived in the format ‘ an increase from 6 percent last year.
A third of the projects presented came from France, with Spain and Germany the two next most prominent production nations. Nordic countries presented 10 projects, and 30 video game companies participated in the event.
Among the high-profile projects presented at the show were The Congress, from Waltz with Bashir director Ari Folman; The Illusionist, from Triplets of Belleville director Sylvain Chomet; Ben Stassen’s Around the World in 50 Years, a.k.a. Sammy’s Adventures; and Le magasin des suicides, the first animated film from Patrice Leconte.
The Cartoon Movie Tributes also were presented at the event, going to:
‘ St’phane Aubier and Vincent Patar as Directors of the Year for Panique au village.
‘ France’s Wild Bunch Distribution as Distributor of the Year.
‘ Belgium’s nWave Pictures as Producer of the Year for Around the World in 50 Years.
Cartoon Movie’s 13th edition will be held March 2-4, 2011, in Lyon, France.
