The 20th edition of Cartoon Movie, the annual European feature animation industry event, held in Bordeaux, France came to a close today (March 9th) with at the announcement of this year’s prize winners.
Turkish filmmaker Sinem Sakaoglu’s stop-motion animation project Kara, which is being co-produced by Visual Distractions (Germany) and Beast Productions (Belgium) was the winner of the Eurimages Co-production Development Award, which is accompanies by a €20,000 cash prize. The award is handed out to help a project with a lead producer based in a Eurimages territory. The stereoscopic 3-D stop-motion project tells the coming-of-age story of a young girl in Istanbul. The jury noted that they were impressed by Kara’s “visual poetic approach based on the cultural identity of the director.
The event’s Director of the Year prize was given to Dorota Kobiela (Poland) and Hugh Welchman (U.K.) for their Oscar-nominated feature animation Loving Vincent. Other nominees were Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner), Arthur de Pins and Alexis Ducord (Zombillenium) and Benjamin Renner and Patrick Imbert (The Big Bad Fox And Other Tales).
Distributor of the Year prize was given to Spanish company Latido Films. Based in Madrid, Latido is launching Buñuel In The Labyrinth Of The Turtles and Memorias De Un Hombre En Pijama.
Cartoon Movie’s Producer of the Year award was given to Platige Films (Poland), Kanaki Films (Spain), Walking the Dog (Belgium), Wüste Film (Germany), Animationsfabrik (Germany), and Puppetworks (Hungary) for their upcoming feature Another Day of Life. Directed by Raul de la Fuente and Damian Nenow, the film follows a veteran Polish journalist who is sent to cover a civil war in Angola in 1975. The movie is directed by Raoul de la Fuente and Damian Nenow.
Over 800 producers, artists, directors, writers, sales agents, broadcasters and film financing professionals attended the event (March 7, 8) in Bordeaux at the 20th edition of the festival. The 2018 edition featured 60 projects from 22 countries in different stages of development and production. We will highlight some of the best of this year’s offerings in the next few days.
