Following the project’s announcement in March of this year, Disney+ has set three young actors for lead roles and added Amy Sedaris to the roster in Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The upcoming live-action/animation hybrid series hails from five-time Emmy-nominated writer/producer Jon Favreau (The Mandalorian, The Jungle Book).
Joining the cast are Ravi Cabot-Conyers (Skeleton Crew, Encanto) as Jake, a hardworking middle schooler with a big heart; Mykal-Michelle Harris (Raven’s Home, Mixed-ish) as Jen, an artistic middle schooler who is always ahead of the game; and Ryder Allen (The Penguin, Palmer) as Taylor, a middle schooler who is cautious but avoids turning down his friends. Sedaris (Strangers with Candy, BoJack Horseman, The Mandalorian) will reportedly be playing Taylor’s mother.
Further details of the show are yet to be announced, but it will center on the nearly 100- year-old toon Oswald. First introduced in the short Trolley Troubles (1927), Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks and is described a “saucy, self-absorbed bunny.”
Oswald starred in 27 Walt Disney Studios shorts through the early 20th century before the character was acquired by Universal Pictures; Disney recaptured the trademark in the early 2000s and reintroduced the beady eyed bunny in the video game Epic Mickey. Since then, Oswald has hopped around Disney parks, licensing and animation projects once more.
Allen is represented by Paradigm and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller et al; Cabot-Conyers by Entertainment 360, Paradigm and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols; Harris by The Osbrink Agency, OPE Partners and Del Shaw; and Sedaris by UTA and Schreck Rose.
