Sony Pictures Ent. and Crunchyroll are building up fan appetite for the third installment of the highly popular Demon Slayer saga, titled Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, which his set to be released in Sept 12 in U.S. theaters. The studios just unveiled the official trailer for the new movie based on Koyoharu Gotoge’s popular manga series y (first published in Shueisha’s Weekly Jump magazine from, Feb. 2016-May 2020.).
Directed by longtime series helmer Haruo Sotozaki and produced by ufotable, the movie chronicles the adventures of teenage demon slayer Tanjiro Kamado who seeks to kill the demon king Muzan Kibutsuji after his family is murdered by demons and his younger sister turned into a demon as well. The film will premiere in Japan on July 18, playing on 443 theaters, including IMAX screenings. Aniplex plans to take the movie to over territories (wider than the franchise’s previous global reach of 145 countries).
The trailer features the theme songs “A World Where the Sun Never Rises” by Aimer and “Shine in the Cruel Night” by LiSA. Both tracks will be released on streaming platforms on July 18.
The Demon Slayer film series has performed quite well at the U.S. box office. The first movie, 2021’s Mugen Train debuted at $21.2 million and went on to score $49.9 million in U.S. theaters ($485.5 million worldwide). The 2023 release To the Swordsmith Village had a $10.1 million opening in the U.S. ($46.2 million total) and a $56.3 million worldside box office.
The Sept. 12 weekend should be a good time to release the movie as its only real competition will be the animated Jesus movie, Light of the World, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues and the latest Stephen King movie, The Long Walk (with Mark Hamill).
