Creative youngsters and burgeoning artists can find a productive way to beat the summer heat this year with Creativity Camp, a series of free online character design workshops presented by creative technology giant Wacom and Best Buy. The four-week live Zoom course runs Mondays, July 28 to August 18 (3-4:30 p.m. PDT), and is free to access.
The workshop is taught by Lafe Smith, the Director of the Master of Arts in Graphic and Web Design at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Smith is a professional artist with a BA in Art from the University of Iowa and an MFA in Sequential Art from SCAD, whose work in storyboarding and illustration has appeared in television commercials, in-store marketing, product branding and more.
About Creativity Camp:
Want to create your own original character for comics, manga, anime, video games, an illustrated story, a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, or just for fun — but don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered! Come join us for Creativity Camp!
During this workshop series, you’ll learn the basics of how to create a character — including finding inspiration, sketching ideas, crafting silhouettes, and creating expressive faces and poses — and will end up with a complete model sheet for your original character! Throughout, you’ll also get expert feedback and support from a professional artist and art school professor.
Each session builds on the last, so if you attend every workshop you’ll have a completed character model sheet at the end. It’s OK if you can’t make it to every session, though — we’ll have recap materials and “homework” to get you caught up, and we’ll eventually publish recordings of the workshops on YouTube. One more reason to attend live, though: we’ll be giving way Wacom drawing tablets during each session, and only attendees are eligible!
