‘The Summer Hikaru Died’ Takes AX Spotlight Ahead of Netflix Release

CyberAgent, Inc. has announced that television anime adaptation of up-and-coming, award winning author Mokumokuren’s The Summer Hikaru Died (original published by Kadokawa, co-produced by CyberAgent and Kadokawa and animated by CygamesPictures) will bet introduced to fans with a special booth at Anime Expo 2025, taking place through July 3-6 in Los Angeles.  

The hit horror manga center on an ordinary high school boy named Yoshiki and his strange experiences with Hikaru, a mysterious being who imitates his best friend who disappeared.

The CyberAgent Group booth in area E-65 of the Los Angeles Convention Center will feature an immersive photo experience that captures the distinctive aesthetic of The Summer Hikaru Died. Visitors will also have the exclusive opportunity to view the production materials, which will be unveiled to the public for the first time.

The Summer Hikaru Died will also hold the North American Premiere of Episode 1 on July 4, accompanied by a special talk panel featuring Mokumokuren and Chiaki Kobayashi (voice of Yoshiki Tsujinaka) and the series producers Chiaki Krakane (Kadokawa) and Manami Kabashima (CyberAgent). They will share insights about the series’ unique appeal with fans attending Anime Expo 2025.

Synopsis: In a certain village … Since their childhood, they have grown up together. Yoshiki and Hikaru, childhood friends. The sun shining down on them , the chirping sound of a cryptotympana facialis, ice cream on the way home, laughing over trivial things, 

One day in summer, no different from any other day … You’re not Hikaru after all, are you? 

Half a year ago, Hikaru went missing in the mountains.  A week later, he came back on a whim.  The voice, the figure, the thing that looked like Hikaru — what was stirring inside… Hikaru is no longer with us. … if that’s the case. 

Starting the days with “something” in the form of a friend, the “same as usual” everyday life.  But at the same time … Strange incidents begin to plague the village. Falling into the unknown “something,” the curtain rises on a coming-of-age horror story.
