Pixar Animation Studios revealed during Annecy Festival today that Incredibles 3, announced at D23 2024, will be directed by Oscar-nominated Peter Sohn (Elemental, The Good Dinosaur). Sohn takes over the superhero franchise’s mantel from Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the first two films and will return as screenwriter for the threequel. Bird will also serve as producer alongside Dana Murray (Soul).
The films center on the Parr family — father Bob (Craig T. Nelson), mother Helen (Holly Hunter), eldest child Violet (Sarah Vowell), middle child Dash (Spencer Fox) and baby Jack-Jack — as they struggle to adjust to a mundane suburban life under a super-suppressing government edict, but must come out of the cape closet in order to save the world. Their allies include Bob’s best friend, Lucius a.k.a. Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) and superhero fashion designer extraordinaire, Edna Mode (voiced by Bird).
The Incredibles kicked off the franchise in 2004, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film and earning $631.4 million in worldwide box office. The hotly anticipated sequel arrived over a decade later with The Incredibles 2 (2018), which racked up $1.24 billion worldwide.
Bird has been described as a “mentor” to Sohn, who worked with the Oscar-winning director on the previous two Incredibles and on every film Bird has directed, from Iron Giant until his current Skydance Animation project Ray Gunn. Sohn was handpicked by Bird and by Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter to carry the Incredibles torch for the third outing.
Sohn’s early credits include animating on The Iron Giant and Osmosis Jones. He joined Pixar as a story artist on Finding Nemo, and went on to serve in the story, animation and senior creative teams on many films, including The Incredibles, Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up and Inside Out before making his directorial debut with The Good Dinosaur. Sohn has also provided voices for a number of Pixar projects.
