Hanna-Barbera Developing ‘Hit Squad’ Adult Puppet-Animated Series Inspired by Gerry Anderson

Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe (The Amazing World of Gumball, The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe) has begun development on Hit Squad, a new adult-targeted animated series inspired by the work of British producer Gerry Anderson (Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet). The series is being developed in close partnership with Anderson Entertainment, led by Gerry’s son Jamie Anderson, who will serve as an executive producer on the project.

About the Series: From the world of Gerry Anderson, Hit Squad is an espionage action-comedy. Set in 1990s London, the series follows an international team of talented spies hellbent on putting death before dishonor as they battle the murky world of hidden foes and dangerous villains. This full puppet show is next generation Supermarionation for an adult audience.

The project is a co-production of Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, Warner Bros. Animation, Mr Morris Productions and Anderson Entertainment. Hit Squad will be directed by British writer-director-animator Darren Walsh (Angry Kid, LEGO City Adventures, Shaun the Sheep), produced by Emmy winner Russell McLean (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Cat Burglar, Angry Kid) and executive produced by Jamie Anderson.

Gerry Anderson was a visionary British creator, producer, and director behind landmark sci-fi and family entertainment titles including Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Space: 1999, produced in his distinctive “Supermarionation” technique. Today, his company, Anderson Entertainment, continues to protect, preserve, and reinvent his extraordinary body of work. Led by his son, Jamie Anderson, the company is spearheading a bold new chapter for the brand — from revitalizing popular classics to developing original productions and through licensing, merchandising and direct-to-consumer initiatives.

Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe is Warner Bros. Discovery’s flagship animation studio within EMEA. Based in London, the studio is home to local productions distributed worldwide, including The Amazing World of Gumball, The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe and Elliott from Earth. Its content has been honored with BAFTA, Emmy, Emile, Annie, Prix Jeunesse, Rockie and Annecy awards. The studio’s upcoming projects include spinoffs from Ben Bocquelet, The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball (Cartoon Network International, coming later this year), and Craig McCracken, Foster’s Funtime for Imaginary Friends (for Cartoon Network U.S.) HBSE is also developing a second rebout of McCracken’s The Powerpuff Girls, and an adaptation of Nadia Shireen’s children’s book, Barbara!
