Primos, the 2D animated Disney Channel series about the summer misadventures of a large multicultural family, will not be returning for a second season, a Disney Television Animation representative confirmed to Animation Magazine. Created by Big City Greens alum Natasha Kline, the series was initially picked up in 2021 and premiered last summer.
Inspired by Kline’s own experiences growing up biracial and bilingual in a blended Mexican-American family in Los Angeles’ Inland Empire, the show centered on an eccentric young girl named Tater Ramirez Humphrey, whose summer plans are upended when all 12 of her cousins (or “primos”) come for an extended stay in their home in the fictional L.A.-esque neighborhood of Hacienda Hills. The project starred Myrna Velasco as Tater; Angélica María as Tater’s grandmother, Buela; Cheech Marin as Tater’s grandfather, Pop; and Melissa Villaseñor as her sister, Nellie.
The series spent several years in development, and underwent additional tweaks due to social media criticism after the opening sequence was revealed. Netizens called out perceived negative stereotypes associated with Latin-American culture, reading some character and setting names as offensive and pointing out “incorrect” Spanish grammar (Kline addressed the latter by explaining Tater is not a fluent Spanish speaker).
Despite the shaky early reception, Primos premiered to warm critical reviews and established its own fandom, with reviewers praising its authenticity, positive messages and comedic charm. The series was nominated for the Annie Award for Best Animation Production and GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming or Film – Animated this year, and won an inaugural Velma Award for positive queer storytelling in kids’ media in late 2024.
Season 1 of Primos is available to stream on Disney+. You can also watch full episodes, music videos and compilations on the Disney Channel YouTube feed.
