Sony announced today it will release Mamoru Hosoda’s much-anticipated new movie, Scarlet, in U.S. theaters on Dec. 12 this year. The studio also revealed the striking new poster for the movie, which centers on a brave princess who transcends space and time. Sony Pictures is also co-financing the new film with Studio Chizu and Nippon TV. The film’s producers are Yuichiro Saito and Nozomu Takahashi for Studio Chizu and Toshimi Tanio for Nippon TV.
Hosoda was nominated for an Academy Award for his 2018 feature Mirai. Among his other acclaimed features are The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006), Summer Wars (2009), Wolf Children (2012) and The Boy and the Beast (2015). He also directed Digimon the Movie (2000) and One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (2005). The Girl Who Leapt Through Time won the Japan Academy’s first prize for Best Animation. Summer Wars was the recipient of an Annie Award nomination for Best Director.
The Holiday 2025 calendar is shaping up to be a busy time for some eagerly anticipated animated and live-action titles: Predator: Badlands (Nov. 7) Wicked: For Good (Nov. 21), David (Nov. 21), Zootopia 2 (Nov. 26.), James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash (Dec. 19), The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants (Dec. 19), A Hundred-Acre Christmas (December 25) and Captain America: Brave New World (Dec.) are among the features to be playing in theaters during that period.
