Paper Owl Films Opens New Belfast Studio

Multi-award-winning and BAFTA-nominated independent producer Paper Owl Films has opened a new studio in Belfast to meet the needs of the company’s growth and strategy goals and to further expand its roster of in-house productions and strategic international partnerships.

Founded in 2012 by Gráinne McGuinness, Stephen Petticrew and Gavin Halpin, Paper Owl Films is known for creating the animated series Pablo, a trailblazing preschool project for autism representation both on screen and in the recording booth, and for the touching short Sol, which explores the experience of grief from a child’s point of view.

Paper Owl is currently in production with animated Pablo spin off for 5-8 year olds, Pablo: Boy Meets School, for BBC Children’s, Crayola Studios and RTÉJr, in partnership with CAKE, and preschool animated series Nikhil & Jay with King Banana and CAKE for CBeebies. The studio’s Celtic-inspired kids anime series Lí Ban for Cúla4/TG4 in Ireland and S4C in Wales has recently started airing, with 52 further episodes in development.

In addition to growing its own slate of projects, Paper Owl’s new 5,000 square foot studio in Belfast will house the company’s core team of creatives working across animation, production, design, live action and post production. Paper Owl’s growth strategy also sees a strengthening of its relationships worldwide as it grows capacity to capitalize on co-production opportunities.

“We are thrilled with our new studio. The new environment is an incredible space where we can continue to build our company culture, foster teamwork and creativity and grow our training programs,” said Gavin Halpin, Managing Director. “Remote working has seen amazing innovation in animation pipelines in recent years, but we have missed that in-person contact that the creative industry thrives on. By creating a truly Hybrid pipeline, our projects have optimum technical efficiency while retaining crew flexibility, allowing us to have exciting in person collaboration and continue to work with global talent.

“It is an exciting time of renewed energy and expansion at Paper Owl Films. We are so grateful to all of our partners who continue to support our efforts to create quality and empowering content for children all over the world!”
