‘LOTR: The War of the Rohirrim’ Speeds to Digital Release on Dec. 27

Just weeks after opening in theaters through New Line Cinema, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set to arrive on digital from Warner Bros. Discovery. The anime-style interpretation of Tolkien lore will be available to stream through premium video on demand on Friday, December 27.

The film will be available through Prime Video to purchase on PVOD at $24.99 or to rent at $19.99 for 48 hours. It will also be available on AppleTV, Vudu and other platforms.

Inspired by the indices of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings saga, The War of the Rohirrim is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, and tells of the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan.

A sudden attack by Wulf (Luke Pasqualino), a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm (Brian Cox) and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg — a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra (Gaia Wise), the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.

The film is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and Japan’s Sola Entertainment Production, directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black LotusGhost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and produced by LOTR films veteran Philippa Boyens, Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou.

Rated PG-13, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim has not achieved the blockbuster status of Peter Jackson’s live-action films. The $30 million production opened domestically at No. 5 with $2 million on Dec. 13 and standing at the digital release announcement at $7.37M ($15.37M worldwide).

While the film clearly has fan appeal, rocking a strong 83% audience-determined Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics found it to be mostly epic spectacle and franchise deep dive than a source of character or narrative depth, splatting the pic with a 47% on RT.
