Nickelodeon’s intrepid baby battalion has been called back into action, with the news that Paramount’s live-action/CG animation feature film is back in the works. Originally announced in 2018 for a 2020 release and then pushed to 2021, the project has been resurrected with directing and writing talent attached after being dropped from the studio’s release schedule in 2019.
Pitch Perfect helmer Jason Moore is directing the hybrid feature from a script written by Saturday Night Live‘s Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó, who created the original 2D-animated 1991 Nicktoon with Paul Germain, are producing alongside Karen Rosenfelt, whose credits include the Twilight, Percy Jackson and Alvin and the Chipmunks film franchises.
The Rugrats series centers on a troupe of babies and toddlers — Tommy (voiced in both versions by E.G. Daily), Chuckie (Nancy Cartwright), Angelica (Cheryl Chase), Susie (Cree Summer) and twins Phil & Lil (Kath Soucie) — who explore the everyday world around them and get caught up in vivid imaginary adventures inspired by the new concepts they discover.
The original show ran from 1991 to 1994, followed by two Jewish holiday specials and then the first series reboot which ran from 1997-2004, interspersed with a number of feature-length adventures and TV specials including The Rugrats Movie, Rugrats in Paris and Rugrats: All Growed Up. The CG-animated reimagining launched on Paramount+ in 2021, but was moved to the Nicktoons TV channel in March of this year.
