The animated movie Haikyu!! The Movie : The Dumpster Battle (aka Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump) continues to score high at the Japanese box office. Now in its third week in release, this first feature title in the Haikyu!!! Final duology has already sold over 6.1 million tickets and brought in 8.75 billion yen (close to $58.35 million) in theaters. The Toho release is directed and written by Susumu Mitsunaka, with character designs by Takahiro Kishida and animation direction by Takahrio Chiba. Production I.G. is the studio behind the film’s animation.
Haikyu! The Dumpster Battle first opened in theaters on Feb. 16 and went on to have the biggest opening weekend for a film in Japan so far this year (beating Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM’s opening numbers)
The manga’s plot centers on a young boy (Shoyo Hinata) who joins his dream high school volleyball team at Karasuno High School after losing his first and only basketball game in junior high. He and his teammates set out to defy the odds and build their underdog status. The new Dumpster Battle movie serves as part one of the big finale of the series. The plot finds the members of Team Karusono preparing to battle against their friends from Nekoma High in the third round of the Tokyo Nationals, after triumphing against Inarizaki High.
Haruichi Furudate’s Haikyu!! manga series ran from 2011 to 2022. VIZ Media published the high school volleyball-themed manga both digitally and in print. MANGA Plus also published an English-language digital manga of the project. The manga then was adapted into a TV series by Production I.G. in 2014. To date four seasons of the Haikyu!! show, four movies and five OVAs have been produced. The hugely popular title has also inspired a series of stage plays, a clay-animated short and a compilation anime package.
