Preparations are well underway for the 47th edition of Cinanima — Portugal’s prestigious, Oscar-qualifying animation festival — which today announced that a record 130 films have been selected to screen across its national and international short and feature film competition tracks. Ninety-eight works from 33 countries (including six feature films) will run in the international competitions (22 hours of films), with France (13 films), the United Kingdom (eight) and Israel (seven) being most represented.
The Grand Prize winner of the international short film competition at Cinanima automatically qualifies for the Academy Awards longlist for Best Animated Short Film.
International Competitions:
- Short Films: 57
- Feature Films: 6
- Student Films: 35
The António Gaio Award and the Young Portuguese Filmmaker Award (which is divided into films made by children under 18 years of age and first films made by youngsters aged between 18 and 30), will present 32 films as part of the National Competition. This is an increase compared to the 31 works screened in 2022, and it represents around four hours of Portuguese production.
In fact, this year’s edition marks the introduction of a second session for the António Gaio Award competition — a mark of the increasing quality of Portuguese animation production.
Portuguese Competitions:
- António Gaio (Short Films): 13
- Young Portuguese Director, ages 18-30 (Short Films): 9
- Young Portuguese Director, under 18 (Short Films): 10
