‘Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire’ Teaser Glimpses Africa’s Expansive Animation Landscape

The official Twitter feed for Disney+ South Africa has revealed the debut teaser trailer for its African sci-fi animation anthology Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire. Announced in 2021 and originally slated to premiere in 2022, this unique showcase is set to arrive on streaming this year at last.

As Triggerfish principal Tendayi Nyeke explained at the initial announcement, “Kizazi Moto” is derived from the Swahili phrase “kizazi cha moto,” literally “fire generation,” which captures “the passion, innovation and excitement this new cohort of African filmmakers is ready to bring to the world.” South Africa’s  Triggerfish is the lead studio for the anthology, collaborating with animation shops across the continent and around the world, with Nyeke and Anthony Silverston as supervising producers.

Oscar-winning director Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) serves as executive producer for the anthology. “I’m really pleased to part of a ground-breaking, fresh and exciting project that’s aimed at exposing the world to a whole new wave of creativity and invention from a place that is just ready to explode onto the world animation scene,” he said back in 2021. “The films in the anthology kind of run the gamut when it comes to science fiction. There are stories that touch on other worlds, time travel, and alien beings, but all of these genre conventions are seen through an African lens that makes them totally new.”

Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire will comprise 10 shorts of roughly 10 minutes’ length. The directors selected from more than 70 top creators who pitched ideas for the anthology are: Ahmed Teilab (Egypt), Simangaliso ‘Panda’ Sibaya and Malcolm Wope (South Africa), Terence Maluleke and Isaac Mogajane (South Africa), Ng’endo Mukii (Kenya), Shofela Coker (Nigeria), Nthato Mokgata and Terence Neale (South Africa), Pious Nyenyewa and Tafadzwa Hove (Zimbabwe), Tshepo Moche (South Africa), Raymond Malinga (Uganda) and Lesego Vorster (South Africa).
