Baobab Studios, the powerhouse animation studio behind the successful Momoguro franchise, announced the imminent launch of their metaverse game this summer. The Momoguro game, titled Momo Quest, is an adventure game coming to Roblox, the global gaming platform which counts more than 58 million daily active users and 13.4 billion hours of user engagement per quarter.
“Roblox is a perfect platform to create experiences that allow players to connect through gaming in immersive worlds with great stories and characters, and which blend gaming with best in class storytelling in immersive worlds,” says studio CEO & Co-Founder Maureen Fan. “Bringing our game to the platform first reflects its ubiquitous presence and growing hold in pop culture today.”
Having recently made its first foray into digital collectibles — which sold out in under eight hours — Baobab sees the metaverse and Roblox in particular as the next step in its continuing journey to engage audiences through well-crafted storytelling and leveraging new fan communities around the world.
Baobab, which has won nine Emmy Awards and creates story franchises across film, TV, games and book publishing that has attracted such talent as Oprah Winfrey, John Legend and Ali Wong, also announced plans to expand upon the success of its metaverse IP into film and TV.
The studio recently announced several collaborations with Disney+ to develop animated series from Baobab’s library, including The Witchverse, based on the studio’s three-time Emmy Award-winning VR film Baba Yaga, as well as the workplace comedy Intercats, which Baobab is also developing into a graphic novel series at First Second Books / MacMillan Publishing.
Baobab’s executive board includes Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull and Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, and investors include Disney, Samsung and Comcast.
