Oscar-Nominated Short ‘My Year of Dicks’ Heads to Hulu Friday

Academy voters and all lovers of coming-of-age comedy in adult animated short form will have a new way to check out one of the year’s best this week, a My Year of Dicks will debut on Hulu on February 17.

The film is directed by Sara Gunnarsdóttir (The Pirate of Love, animation on Diary of a Teenage Girl) and created by Pamela Ribon, based on her acclaimed memoir Notes to Boys (and Other Things I Shouldn’t Share in Public). Set in 1990s suburban Houston, the 25-minute short is a hilarious and provocative look at sex from one teen’s quest to lose her virginity.

Nominated for the Best Animated Short Academy Award, the multi-award-winning film is produced by Wonder Killer, Cat’s Pajamas and FX Productions (marking the label’s first Oscar nomination), and heads to the streamer through a deal between Hulu sibling company FX Networks.

Synopsis: It’s 1991 and Pam is trying very hard to lose her virginity, but it sure doesn’t match up to her fantasies. Always searching for her ultimate paramour, this old soul swimming in new puberty will struggle between the real world and her grandiose fantasies by exploring a relatable variety of boys of yore– goths, skaters, indie film snobs, straight edge poseurs– all while trying her best to avoid being grounded. Luckily, she has her best friends by her side, who’d like to keep her from cementing a mistake

Told in five chapters and incorporating a mix of rotoscope, animation, collage, drawings and archival footage, My Year of Dicks has been a festival hit, taking home awards from Annecy (Best TV Production), Ottawa (Best Animated Series), SXSW (Special Jury Recognition for Unique Vision), Chicago and Brooklyn.

The short is already available to watch on Vimeo, where it achieved Staff Pick status.
