Imagen Awards Nominees: ‘Encanto’ Is an Animated Standout in Film Competition

The nominations for the 37th annual Imagen Awards were announced earlier today by award-winning actor, writer & producer Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) and actress, writer & producer Karrie Martin Lachney (Gentefied). Recognizing the powerful work driven by Latino film and television talent, the awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, October 2 in Los Angeles at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes.

“After two years of streaming celebrations, we are ecstatic to be back in person and to honor those who made significant contributions to the television, film, and streaming spaces. With the caliber of talent and the diversity of the roles and projects, our expectations were wildly exceeded with 445 entries, up 125 from 2021! We are beyond proud of this year’s nominees and all those who submitted. Given the excellence of the entries, the judges had a difficult time selecting those to be nominated,” the presenters enthused. “Congratulations to all of this year’s nominees!”

This year’s animation nominees are a real celebration of young Latina heroines: Disney’s Encanto scored six nominations (including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress) and DreamWorks Animation’s Spirit Untamed is also nominated for Best Feature Film. Netflix’s widely acclaimed event series Maya and the Three and PBS KIDS’ contemporary cultural celebration Alma’s Way both snagged three nominations, and the fan-favorite Disney Channel toon The Owl House is up in two TV categories.
