E.D. Films Debuts Trailer for Haunting Fantasy Short ‘Return to Hairy Hill’

Following its exclusive sneak peek at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Montreal-based boutique animation studio E.D. Films has unveiled the first official trailer for its upcoming, intricately crafted short film Return to Hairy Hill (Retour à Hairy Hill). Based on true events, this fantastical fable tells the story of a young girl struggling to understand her destiny as her mother, father and siblings gradually succumb to the northern wilderness.

Emerging from E.D. Films art director/co-founder Daniel Gies’ personal history, the film began as a floating collection of inter-generational tales remembered from childhood. Over the years, these reformed into a single true story about the director’s Franco-Albertan great-grandmother, his Métis rodeo star great-grandfather and their fragile family’s breaking point.

Over 10 years in the making, Return to Hairy Hill is being produced with an in-house hybrid paper, 2D, 3D and game engine (using the studio’s proprietary Scene Track plug-in) pipeline, illustrative animation experience and input from a number of other artists. In this film, history, artistic vision and cutting edge tools have united to bring an animated tribute to family folklore to the screen.

Return to Hairy Hill is due to premiere in 2023.
