Hayley Atwell Cast as Lara Croft in Netflix’s ‘Tomb Raider’ Anime Series

Netflix and Legendary Television announce Hayley Atwell (Captain America, Mission Impossible 7) as the voice of videogame adventurer Lara Croft in the upcoming anime series based on Square Enix’s Tomb Raider global franchise.

Atwell is a Golden Globe and Olivier Award-nominated British actress who will next star opposite Tom Cruise as the female lead of Mission: Impossible 7. Her other film credits include Julian Jarrold’s Brideshead Revisited (2008) and The Duchess (2008), for which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 2008 British Independent Film Awards. She also starred in Disney’s Christopher Robin (2018) and in Blinded by the Light (2019), directed by Gurinder Chadha.

In 2011, Atwell was cast opposite Chris Evans in Marvel blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger. Her character Peggy Carter was given her own show, Agent Carter in 2015, the first-ever Marvel spin-off to be fronted by a woman. She has reprised this role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Ant-Man (2015) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Atwell’s animation credits include the voice of Mittens in Peter Rabbit 2 and Zadra in 3Below, as well as reprising the role of Peggy Carter for Avengers Assemble, the videogames Captain America: Super Soldier and LEGO Marvel’s Avengers and, most recently, in Marvel’s animated anthology series What If…?.

Picking up after the events of the highly successful Tomb Raider videogame reboot trilogy, the animated series will chart the globetrotting heroine’s latest, greatest adventure. Twenty-five years after her first game appeared, Lara continues to explore new territory.

The Netflix series is written and executive produced by Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Red Sonja); also exec producing are dj2 Entertainment Founder & CEO Dmitri M. Johnson (Sonic the Hedgehog, Life Is Strange), Howard Bliss and Stephan Bugaj; and Jacob Robinson, under his company Tractor Pants.

In the 25 years since its launch, the Tomb Raider videogame series has sold over 84 million copies and garnered a treasure chest worth of awards. The game’s success has led to a global franchise encompassing movies, merchandise, comic books and now, a stylish animated series. The most recent game release, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, has received numerous “Best of” nominations and awards. The Tomb Raider videogames are developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montréal, and published by Square Enix.
