The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has unveiled the list of this year’s student animation nominees. Cal Arts, USC and Ringling College of Art and Design were the top schools in the U.S, while Filmakademi Baden-Wurttemberg, ESMA and MoPA placed the international nominees.

The Academy established the Student Academy Awards in 1972 to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the collegiate level. Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive 46 Oscar nominations and have won or shared eight awards. They include John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Robert Zemeckis, Trey Parker and Spike Lee. Last year, Beth David and Esteban Bravo (Ringling College of Art and Design) won the Gold Award for their short In a Heartbeat, which was also nominated in the Best Animated Short category.
