Fox Animation has picked up adaptation rights to forthcoming middle grade book The Care and Feeding of a Pet Black Hole, Deadline reports. The book is coming this September from Dial Books and author Michelle Cuevas (The Uncorker of Ocean Bottles, Confessions of an Imaginary Friend).
The studio is finalizing a deal with War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves to produce the project under his shingle 6th and Idaho. Elizabeth Reddy will oversee production for Fox Animation.
In the book, 11-year-old Stella Rodriguez is followed home from NASA by a lonely black hole. At first, the black hole’s ability to swallow everything he touches comes in handy for unwanted items — like the ugly sweaters from her aunt and the things that remind her painfully of her dead father. It’s not until things get entirely out of hand that Stella realizes she has been letting her own grief consumer her.
