Turin, Italy’s VIEW Fest — the film festival running alongside the VIEW Conference — has wrapped up, and awarded CG animated student short Shift its first place prize.
Shift is a graduation film by Maria Cecilia Pugliesi and Yijun Liu, produced in the School of Visual Arts MFA Computer Art program. The jury was unanimous in naming it the best film of the festival, specifically lauding “the directors’ attention to lighting and composition [and its] exciting, unique look for a CG film.”
Second place honors were awarded to Phantom Power a music promo from Persistent Peril in the U.K., for its “high-concept design, character design, strong animation and story, and beautiful pacing.”
Three projects were given honorable mentions: David Jansen’s Daewit (Germany), Janette Goodey & John Lewis’ The Story of Percival Pilts (Australia) and Ao Li’s Olilo (US), also out of SVA’s MFA Computer Art program.
The VIEW Fest jury included directors Mark Osborne (The Little Prince), Jorge Gutierrez (The Book of Life) and Shannon Tindle (Google Spotlight Stories’ On Ice), Pixar DP Kim White, PDI co-founder Glenn Entis, Polytechnic University of Turin’s Andrea Martin and Chiara Sapio, Nemo School of Animation’s Federica Fabbri, journalist Barbara Robertson and VIEW Conference & Fest director Maria Elena Gutierrez.
