‘Maya’ Flies, ‘Strange Magic’ Casts Spell on Disc

A pair of under-the-radar animated features make this an interesting week for home video releases.

First, is Maya the Bee Movie (Shout! Factory; $24.97, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy; $14.98 DVD), bringing to American homes the German-Australian animated feature. The movie is based on the children’s book series by Waldemar Sauermann and features the voices of Coco Jack Gillies and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

And then there’s Strange Magic (Disney, $29.99 DVD), the animated musical feature from Lucasfilm about a fairy who falls in love with the Bog King. Directed by Gary Rydstrom, it features the voices of Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming.

Kid-oriented releases this week include: Adventures of Chuck & Friends: Day at the Races (Cinedigm, $12.99 DVD), Babar: The Ultimate Collection (eOne Entertainment, $12.98 DVD), Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie’s Pet Salon (Disney, $19.99 DVD), Octonauts: Crocodiles & Crabs! (nCircle Entertainment, $9.99 DVD), Peg + Cat: Out on a Limb (PBS, $6.99 DVD), Team Umizoomi: Meet Shark Car (Paramount, $14.99 DVD) and Wordworld: Outdoor Fun (PBS, $9.99 DVD).

And a quartet of strong anime releases promise fans hours of viewing pleasure: Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040: The Complete Series Classic 2 (FUNimation, $39.98 DVD), .Hack//Roots: The Complete Collection (FUNimation, $39.98 DVD), Nobunagun: The Complete Series (FUNimation; $64.98 Blu-ray; $69.98 limited edition Blu-ray) and Wanna Be The Strongest In The World: The Complete Series (FUNimation; $64.98 Blu-ray; $69.98 limited edition Blu-ray).
