‘Twilight’ Tops Global Indie B.O.; Ghibli’s ‘Arriety’ Leads Toons

Five of the 50 top-grossing independent films of 2010 are animated features, according to a new list released by the Independent Film & Television Alliance.

The top-grossing independent animated film was the Studio Ghibli anime Karigurashi No Arrietty (The Borrower Arrietty), grossing $114 million worldwide and landing in ninth place on the list. Other animated entries include Pokémon: Zoroark —Master of Illusions, with $46 million; Sammy’s Adventures: The Secret Passage with $43 million; Alpha and Omega, with $42 million and Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser, with $37 million.

The list was topped by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which grossed $698 million worldwide. More than a third of the films on the list also were non-English language films.

IIFTA compiled the top-50 list based on data from Rentrak Box Office Essentials.
