The Visual Effects Society (VES) has issued its list of nominees for the first annual VES Awards, to be held on Feb. 19 in the Ahmanson Ballroom at Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Presented by discreet, the black tie dinner event will honor excellence for visual effects in feature films, television, commercials and music videos.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones led the pack with eight and six nominations respectively. Both films will be competing with Men in Black II for the distinction of Best Visual Effects in an Effects Driven Motion Picture.
Curiously, only Towers and Die Another Day are in the running for Best Special Effects in a Motion Picture, while Best Character Animation in a Live Action Motion Picture will be chosen from the obvious field of Clones, Towers and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Also curiously narrow is the field of competitors for Best Character Animation in an Animated Motion Picture. In a year when 17 animated films qualify for Oscar consideration, only Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and Stuart Little 2 are in contention.
On the television side, Best Visual Effects in a Television Miniseries, Movie, or a Special will be a race among Stephen King’s Rose Red, James Cameron’s Expedition Bismarck and Dinotopia. Episodes of Dinotopia, Firefly and Enterprise have all been named in the category Best Visual Effects in a Television Series.
