SOFTIMAGE|XSI v.3.0 First To Use NVIDIA Cg language

The SOFTIMAGE®|XSI v.3.0 3-D nonlinear production software is the market’s first digital content creation application to incorporate Cg, a high-level programming language NVIDIA developed in close collaboration with Microsoft Corporation.

A spokesperson for SoftImage says use of the C-like language, compatible with Microsoft’s HLSL for DirectX 9.0 and the OpenGL API, will give them the ability to produce richer and more visually sophisticated results in less time.

Cg expands the functionality of SOFTIMAGE|XSI software by allowing users to drag and drop shader nodes or material presets from NetView directly into their scene’s Render Tree window. This means programmers and artists can use Cg-based shaders directly from the Web in the SOFTIMAGE|XSI environment. Furthermore, it allows for comprehensive control over effect intensity, location, material properties and other variables.

According to NVIDIA, Cg also allows users to visualize content from within the application as it will appear as a final rendering and removes the need for developers to program directly to the graphics hardware assembly language.
